The Kindle paper white does have a dark background option but most people prefer the night mode.
The iphone (IOS) device also has a night mode.
Go to: Settings
Then scrolll down to “Display & brightness”
It right below the brightness scroll bar

You don’t need a night light for either the Kindle paper white or fire.

You can buy the kindles on sale this Friday. (Black Friday)

The Kindle fire 7 is the cheapest ($49)
but the paper white ($120) is the best for reading.

Or you can just drop a lot of hints and wait until Christmas.

[quote="WordDiva"]Smartphone/tablet screens emit bright blue light so you can see them even at the sunniest times of day.

But at night, your brain gets confused by that light, as it mimics the brightness of the sun. This causes the brain to stop producing melatonin, a hormone that gives your body the "time to sleep" cues. Because of this, smartphone light can disrupt your sleep cycle, making it harder to fall and stay asleep — and potentially causing serious health problems along the way.

Apple with iOS 9.3 update changes that. It enables a new mode called Night Shift that you can set starting at whatever you choose time in the evening. When Night Shift kicks in, your phone automatically adjusts the display so that it gives off warmer, less blue light.

Thank you I didn't realize that change was for all IOS devices (Including computers).
I just turned it on for my laptop.
Now maybe I'll log off before midnight.

For anyone using Windows (any version) try f.lux - https://justgetflux.com/
I use it all of the time and my eyeballs thank me. It has a day mode and night mode, and you can adjust your screen to be brighter or dimmer, no matter what time of the day. There's even an option to disable if you're doing graphics work and need true colour for a while. Once I installed it, I never went back. ♥
