Batman Returns. No, Not the Movie. Reviewed by Blurred View on Nov. 17, 2010.
In this oneshot, we discover the origin of the bat that inspired Bruce Wayne to become Batman. And it is awesome. I'm actually serious. This scene is without a doubt the best part of the entire issue. I love that bat. That bat is now one of my favorite Batman characters.

But most of this issue involves Batman discovering a new global enemy in the form of a secret organization calling itself Leviathan. ...Wait, did Batman just join the Secret Warriors?

I'm not yet sold on the idea of Batman Inc. It seems like a concept that could make for some interesting stories or become a total disaster. Given past experiences with DC trying to build off of Grant Morrison's plots, it's hard not to lean toward expecting the latter. It's this issue's purpose to kick off and really sell us on the new direction of the Bat-franchise, but it does so with mixed results. The decision to leave Dick and Damian in Gotham City as Batman and Robin is made understandable in this story, but it still feels like a case of DC trying to have its cake and eat it too. There's also a worrying sign that after 15 excellent issues Batman Inc. is going to come in and demolish Batgirl's status quo. But then, it is quite cool to see Batman globetrotting, and the idea of him waging an international war against some shadowy organization is a very interesting one.

Seeing Bruce and Damian work together as Batman and Robin is another highlight of this issue. It is something we have been waiting for, and it develops in an good way. Damian may be coming along well as Robin, but he is Dick's Robin. It was good to see that father and son do not immediately gel as partners.

There is a weird scene that feels lifted right out of the Christopher Nolan films with Bruce basically shopping for new gadgets in Wayne Enterprises' stockpile of technology deemed too expensive by the military. He's even escorted by a very Morgan Freeman-looking Lucius Fox. It isn't a bad scene, and it does completely make sense in the context of Batman Inc. But its a very familiar scene that feels awkward in a book that's putting forth so many new ideas.

David Finch is, simply, an overrated artist. He is not a bad artist, but the excellent work he is known for is not what you're going to get most of the time. This issue showcases that. There are some awesome images in this oneshot, such as a big shot of the Bat-clan gathered in the Batcave and a seated Batman at the end ready to kick off his global initiative. But most pages aren't up to the same quality. The rest of his work is just fine. Many panels feel like they have either been rushed or not given much consideration. The designs for the jet suits Batman and Robin use look like they were made as a quick afterthought. A monstrous enemy they fight is fairly forgettable looking. And you aren't going to find much of a variety of facial expressions. But credit where credit is due. Batman's new costume is pretty sweet.

Misgivings about Batman Inc aside, this is a good issue on its own. The opening scene is amazing. The action is good and varied. It's great to see Bruce, Dick and Damian interact again after all that has happened. This is an issue that may not launch us into Batman Inc. with much momentum but does make for a solid read.

A Decent Showing, Reviewed by MechanisticMoth on Nov. 19, 2010.
This comic started out really neat. I mean, you get to see bats fighting! Bats! That's right, bats in a Batman comic! Hurrah! This lovely lead-in to the main feature balanced pretty well. And then, onto the main feature, we get Bruce Wayne back at his old tricks BUT BIGGER.

Now, this section seemed a bit rushed especially since I figured Bruce's briefing of the Bat Family would last a bit longer with Red Robin at least getting a few good lines. Nevertheless, this was about Bruce. Except, then it went to Bruce and Damian in ridiculous robot costumes. I couldn't tell if they were inside the robot or outside or whatever until a decent amount into the scene. A nearly forgettable character is introduced along with the criminal organization that will face off against Batman Inc. I'm intrigued but not overly excited.

I suppose my biggest complaint was all of the unnecessary extra content. It basically goes "oooh... here's the original pencils! Now, here are the inked pencils! Oh, new designs! Golly gee this is fantastic! Let's throw in some of the finalized scripts! Yipee!" Now, I'm not going to complain and be like "hey, you should have offered me more pages of art!" But, at the very least, they could have offered some of the bonus material on their The Source website, cut it out of the comic, and raised the price down a dollar. That would have made me much more pleased.

Nevertheless, the comic itself was decent, and it functions as a good kickoff to the new era of Batman.

See The Return of Bruce Wayne => Batman: The Return => Batman: Gates of Gotham => Batman Incorporated (Batman Inc.) for continuity/story arch.
