Atomic Robo & The Deadly Art of Science by Brian Clevinger - C -
Requirements: CBR reader, about 18 Mb each
Overview: Ah, 1930′s America. A time of prohibition, Al Capone and jazz. Also, thanks to Red 5 Comics, we discover it was a time where the world’s first artificial intelligence experienced a very real and slightly mundane human emotion: boredom.

It’s been a few months since Atomic Robo walked away from his creator, Nicola Tesla, in boredom over his limited part in their experiments. He’s found a new home as a sidekick to the mystery man Jack Tarot (a very reluctant mentor indeed) and perhaps even love with Jack’s daughter, but when the team find themselves unable to solve a rash of science crimes, Robo comes home for help. Also – robots fighting other robots. As most of Robo’s adventures have taken place further on in the timeline (an advantage of a series of this nature is the ability to fly to any time period you so choose), it’s rare that we’ve gotten a chance to see him really interact with Tesla. The relationship we get here is wonderful, a very real, believable father/son paradigm defining the two characters. Robo comes across as more and more human the more we read about him. It would be easy to call stories like this one a “fill in the blank” tale, explaining how Robo came to be the man he is in the contemporary stories, but I think that would do this comic a disservice. It’s far more than that. It’s an engaging, entertaining story in its own right, full of action, comedy, and sweetly tender moments that are more satisfying than almost any other comic out there. I’ve got to say it again: I just love Atomic Robo.
