The Book of Ballads and Sagas by Charles Vess et all
Requirements: CBR Reader, 42 MB.
Overview: A collection of short graphic narrative adaptions of Scottish, English, and Irish ballads written by respected authors in the fantasy and mystery book field and drawn by award winning artist Charles Vess.
Beginning in 1995 Vess self-published a biannual series of comics entitled The Book of Ballads and Sagas through his Green Man Press. In this series Vess illustrated adaptations of traditional Scottish and English ballads written by a variety of contributors, including Emma Bull, Charles de Lint, Neil Gaiman, Sharyn McCrumb, Jeff Smith, and Jane Yolen. Issues 1-4 were collected and published as Ballads in 1997. The work was reprinted as a hardback by Tor Books in 2004 with additional material, including an introduction by Terri Windling.

"Ballads" is the trade paperback collection of Vess' four-issue "Book of Ballads and Sagas" comic book. Writers include Neil Gaiman, Charles deLint, Jane Yolen, and Sharyn Crumb. The stories are all based upon songs such as "Twa Corbies," "Barbara Allen," and "Tam Lin." They are all exceptionally well-written, and the illustrations are beautiful, sensitively drawn pen and ink work by one of today's finest proponents of fantasy art. Mr. Vess' work has been compared to Arthur Rackham's, and believe me, he certainly doesn't suffer by the comparison. This book will be loved and treasured not just by afficionados of fantasy, but also by fans of folk music, and by all those who appreciate truly fine artwork.

Noted illustrator Charles Vess brings his evocative, meticulously detailed artwork to a self-published anthology that features comic book adaptations of legendary ballads and mythological tales. In the first issue for example, Vess has gathered other luminaries like Sandman’s Neil Gaiman to pen an adaptation of “The False Knight on the Road.“ Other stories featured in the premiere issue include “Thomas the Rhymer,“ adapted by Sharyn McCrumb, and the first installment in an ongoing serial, “Skade,“ inspired by Norse mythology. Other issues include stories like Charles DeLint’s version of “Twa Corbies, “ Jane Yolen’s adaptation of “King Henry“ (previously printed in an issue of Dark Horse Presents), and an illustrated play version of “Tam-Lin“ entirely by Vess himself. Vess’ passion for the material permeates every page, and he includes original texts wherever appropriate. Articles on the research underlying the stories and discographies of related folk recordings round out each issue.
