GANGLAND, Loving the smell of vice and corruption in morning. Reviewed by Brian Domingos.
I've always been a sucker for a good crime story. There's just something about mobsters and crime lords coming out on top that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. I like when Crime Does Pay. So, naturally, I was drawn to the GANGLAND anthology series.

It shows a darker side of comics. It tells the tales of the guys in the deep, dark, commonly overlooked spaces. It's about the thugs that work for the Joker. Petty crooks and con men trying to make a quick buck. The good stuff.

GANGLAND starts with an excellent introduction by Greg (WHITEOUT, DETECTIVECOMICS) Rucka. He talks about crime and its appeal to the common person. "When was the last time you contemplated breaking the law? I mean, really breaking it," he asks. When was the last time? Would I actually do anything about it? Great questions, really. Its a perfect start to a near-perfect series.

GANGLAND contains 14 stories by some of comics top creators. Brian Azzarello, Tim Bradstreet, Dave Gibbons, Jamie Delano, Ed Brubaker, Kilian Plunkett, David Lloyd and countless others gathered their guts and smeared them on a page to make a great collection of crime stories. Each has its own distinct feel. The contrast between the stories is what makes it all so compelling and entertaining.

GANGLAND is not all about petty thugs and gangsters. There are tales from the ghetto, an everyday neighbourhood, stories of cavemen, robots, dentists, futuristic communists, dogs and (in one case) a dragon. Each one holds you tight, immersing you in a shady, otherwise unfamiliar world, be it realistic or fantastic.

Writer Brian Azzarello and artist Tim Bradstreet kick it all off with a twisted tale about the Witness Protection Program. There's 'Chains' -- a three-page story by Peter Kuper -- about the opium trade. It's rendered completely without words. Doselle Young and Frank Quitely gears and do a cute little tale about a gangster marriage.

Its all wrapped up, about a hundred pages later, with 'Electric China Death,' by Richard Bruning and Mark Chiarello. 'ECD' shows two thugs shutting down a small time Chinese restaurant, and, ultimately, we witness the consequences. This one was perhaps my favorite. A perfect ending. Moody art work coupled with tight dialogue helps complete the yarn. It ends with a supernatural twist and a chill up the reader's spine.

Most of the stories end abruptly. Some just make you think. Some just make you sick. But all in all, they are very well done. The collection gathers evidence of everyday crime and shoves it in your face for you to see. It shows you how bad life gets and how equally bad human beings can be.

Recommended with reservations. A must for fans of cheating, stealing, guns and other fun stuff like that.
