Myth or Reality? King Solomon's mines still fanning all covetousness, for over 300 years after their alleged discovery by a Portuguese explorer. In the late nineteenth century, Neville Curtis organizes an expedition to try to get hold of the diamonds, but quickly, it gives no sign of life. His brother, Henry, flanked by Captain Good, decides to go looking for him in northern Transvaal, South Africa. The adventure is dangerous and one man seems able to help them carry out this mission, Allan Quatermain. In exchange for half of the booty and a secure future for his son, he agrees to accompany them.

The first surpriseThe title of the diptych. Allan Quatermain and King Solomon's Mines seems to adhere strictly to the novel by Sir Henry Haggard Ridey. No vampires, no monster submarine out of the depths of time ... It will look elsewhere for the fantastic element promised by the concept of the collection "1800". Loyalty goesbeyond the cover. Quatermain is a peerless hunter, an adventurer brave, but it's also a torture, greedy, full of prejudice against black people he considers inferior. The hero is thus much closer to an opium addict of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen as an Indiana Jones. Relating to history, Dobbs does not add any artificial, no outside, not even a female character, as was the case in most film adaptations.

The design of Sun D. manages to revive the atmosphere of the African end of the nineteenth century, thanks colorization perfectly controlled. Very comfortable in the sets, whether in the streets and in the Cape Town harbor, or in the savannah (ah, the hunting of elephants ...), it is also with all actors, including Quatermain, face marked by his past adventures.

Both authors make a good beginning for a story, for the time and rather than the uneven collection in 1800, might as well have found its place in the collection "Noctambule" ..
