i was wondering if there are any apps of some sort available that are able to notify the user that an app installed from .apk instead of the market, that a new version is available.

Just a notification is enough, so atleast i know that i need to download a new version here.

Checking independently every 2 weeks or so for every app is a bit of a hassle. (i have a lot installed)

Checkout the app "aTrackDog", I don't think it can notify automatically, but you can manually search for updates for all of your apps at the same time.
