As far as I know it's not possible to do that as the IMEI number is permanently flashed onto the motherboard of the device, if you want to change it you would have to replace the motherboard.

Nope, I don't think that would work. You would have to hack the firmware of the motherboard itself and change the IMEI number. It's not easy to do and you would need to have knowledge of machine code.
