If it does not belong anywhere else and has to do with Android post it here.

Guys,

I have had several smartphones over my years but my Android HTC Desire is the only one that does not "seem" to have a program/widget that power off the phone from a soft switch. Only way seems to be holding down the power button.

I need to power off my phone twice per day, holding down the power button then pressing soft switch is a pain.

If anyone knows of such a app/widget please let me know.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried "Power widget" and it does allow you to set a lot of things but not actually "Power off" believe it or not.

Bloop,

You are going to think I am a bit of a dick head when i tell you this but in a previous phone one of the buttons was used so much it stopped working, thus killed the phone.
As you probably know the "Power" button is used to "wake up" the phone plus other stuff.
As I see it, if I don't have to hold it down to turn it off that is just one less chance of failure.
I know I am being pedantic but is does seem like a simple request. After all when you hold the power button you get a soft switch list anyway, why not be able to access the "Power off/Shut down" function directly.

im sure you can make a simple code that powers off the phone like a bat file can in windows. You you just need to know what Linux OS it is using to use the right code for it. Granted this is just a thought not fact as I have not looked into it cuz I dont shut off my phone.

It must be harder than we think.

Iphone
Palm
Symbion
Windows mobile

All have it except Android, very strange.

Cheers

I'm sure I saw one around. That let you shut down, restart or restart in recovery.
This one lets you reboot: http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.sir ... quickboot/
I don't know if you can power off but it doesn't seem so from the description.

Davidgilling,

Thanks for that info and link.

It does exactly what i want but phone needs to be "rooted" to work. I have not "rooted" my phone yet, am still a bit shy on how to do it. Seems a lot of info about it some of it conflicting. I have a HTC Desire.

I don't have the HTC Desire, but for my phone the good old devs at xda made a one click batch file to do all the stuff for me :)
Look here's a really easy guide, if you decide you want root: http://theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to ... tc-desire/
