In a few weeks i will get my htc desire :D .... at least when it is available in the netherlands again. My wife al ready has her's, so i play around with that one.

Now my question: Why do you want to / have to root your phone (HTC desire)? What can you do extra with it?

I have downloaded lots of apps through this site (mobilism) which is totally awsome, but i can use everything with my standard HTC, so rooting is not necessary.

Therefore the question: why should i root the phone?

Hope somebody here can help me :D.

I do not have the desire but do have the moto droid and I rooted mine as I do not like the unused apps that came perinstalled and I do not like the new 2.2 that moto and verizon came out with.

And you can use a2sd+ with the rooted phone which moves the dalvik-cache to the sd card giving you a shitload of extra free memory to install stuff...
Couldn't live without it.

I always assumed you were supposed to root it. I got rid of Amazon MP3 and I thought the apps wouldn't work without rooting it. There are some really neat options with rooting as well, but the reason I did it was because I always get a device because you can hack it.

google your device type and root. You will have plenty of places to choose from.

My advice is take your time and read then re-read the instructions - don't want to brick your device.

As others mentioned rooting your phone allows you to remove bloatware from your phone.
Some apps require root to work properly (shootme & other screen shot apps).

One of my favorite features is the ability to backup PROTECTED apks. Sometimes apps that you download from the market are listed as 'private' and can't be backed up with any utilities. Rooting your phone lets you backup protected apps.

I like having backups of any app I find useful. Sometimes a new version of an app comes out but you find the older version had features missing from the newer one or the older one worked better. The market only lets you download the newest one but if you have a backup of the old apk you can just reinstall.

Finally rooting allows you to really hack your phone, customizing all the startup and shutdown animations, sounds, and even flash a different ROM onto your phone.

Search XDA Developers they have all kinds of info on rooting and modding Android phones.
