Not sure if this is the right forum for this but:

A few years ago there was a keyboard you could buy for the pc which had a display for every button you could press, and could be changed independently of each other. http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/

I was wondering if there is any android app that works in this fashion, that is, becomes an extension to your pc keyboard with customizable icons and layouts, using your android phone as an input?

Try RemoteDroid
[You'll need to download the PC Server from their website]
and then you point RemoteDroid to your computers IP address eg: 192.168.1.2 [Check with ipconfig first]
And use your device's keyboard.
