Dear friens,
I'm back, owner of a tablet (flytouch3 , 10,1" , 1024x600) with Android 2.2.
I'm still fighting with the OS but at least have downloaded NX 1.3.3 and Aviasoft folder.
Very clever the solution for initial selection of topic and groups! Bravo Sarah!
Unfortunately I'm facing a bunch of problems:

* no way to see Aviasoft folder on external SD (have 16GB internal+ 16GB removable),

* the display covers only about 25% of my screen and is hanging on the corner top/left
* descriptions go beyond the (reduced) screen of about 10% at left
* images and photos are cut at right even if seems to me that there is some room left
* partial distorted overlap between the descriptions and the bottom keys/arrows

May be most of this is due to my limited experience with Android...

Hi A

No it is not your experience but Android to blame. It seems that so far there are some non-standard aspects to the many various phones and tablets out there.

SD Card root-paths:
Android has problems with all the different device types around. So far there is not a standard for the root-path to the micro sd card although there is what I name a default path which is the most found path for phones. I have added extra custom paths to the 1.3.3 version of the program but clearly your tablet has yet another non-standard root-path. If you can tell me what it is I will add it to the program. ;)

Screen resolution:
Android is supposed to use the nearest defined screen size/resolution so that it can automatically resize apps to the device's display. The programmer should create program display layouts for different screen sizes and Android should pick the nearest one to the device. I created a 1024 screen layout and it ignored it in the past. It should select that one for tablets like yours. Instead it selects a smaller phone sized screen layout design. This is when making Android programs with Basic4Android and it doesn't work well. I have had to add code to fix display errors and I can do the same for 1024 tablets. There are many different screen size/resolutions out there and it is not possible to get everyone perfect, especially tablets.

Your comments...
* no way to see Aviasoft folder on external SD (have 16GB internal+ 16GB removable)
>>SEE ATTACHED APP I SENT YOU IN EMAIL AND COMMENTS ABOVE
* the display covers only about 25% of my screen and is hanging on the corner top/left
>>THIS IS A SCREEN LAYOUT SELECTION PROBLEM
* descriptions go beyond the (reduced) screen of about 10% at left
* the display covers only about 25% of my screen and is hanging on the corner top/left
>>THIS IS A 'WRONG' SCREEN LAYOUT SELECTION CONSEQUENCE
* images and photos are cut at right even if seems to me that there is some room left
>>THIS IS A 'WRONG' SCREEN LAYOUT SELECTION CONSEQUENCE
* partial distorted overlap between the descriptions and the bottom keys/arrows
>>THE BUTTONS ARE TRANSPARENT - IS THIS WHAT YOU MEAN?

Amedeo, do you need a screen capture app?

Hi Sarah,
On my LG 3D there are both internal and removable SD cards. If I have the Aviasoft folder on the external card the app can't find it. The card shows up as a directory of the internal card with the folder name _ExternalSD so I guess it just needs /_ExternalSD adding to the possible paths?
Version 1.3.3 seems to be fine apart from the above.

Pete

@captaincalamity the file name is".nomedia" (the dot at the start is the Linux method of indicating a hidden file) but you are right, making a file with this name will stop those files being found by a media scan. Putting it in the main Aviasoft directory is enough to affect all sub folders. like I said this will be a hidden file so once made it will not be visible.

One problem with many tablets is that they use a custom 'root' name. The standard root name is /mnt/. So it is important to know the root as well as the pathname of the sdcard. The standard call to Android to get the SDCARD uses the root mnt. So when other roots are used by OEMs the standard programming code cannot find this external sd card.

I have added your root/sdcardname to program version 1.3.5 as:

/mnt/_ExternalSD/

version 1.3.5 here

Try it Pete?

Sarah Hi,

the path for my phone is mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD sorry I should have been more precise. I think this is known in Linux/Unix as a symbolic link, the system thinks stuff is going to one place but it actually goes somewhere else. A very useful is somewhat misleading method. :-)

Any more thoughts on EuroBirds? ;-)

Try this new verison (1.3.6), Pete

(I have amended the root/path to mnt/sdcard/_ExternalSD)

I have abandoned the Eurobirds program on the bird forum. I may continue it on this forum, I haven't decided yet. I felt it was the best thing to do as some bird forum members wished to bring up the copyright issue. That's the trouble with forums. There is such a wide range of attitudes. I am sure there are peeps there who would really like the program but it only takes one person to cause lots of hassles. I have considered my software a useful 'container' to view a range of information and images. It is not as if I am trying to sell it. But it is still clearly an issue to some on the bird forum so it is better if I stop work on it there.

In fact, I am losing my website domain name as I haven't been able to pay for another year's renewal. I expect I won't lose it forever once I pay the cost. But the site will no doubt be unavailable for a time. :(

I have released Eurobirds beta here:

viewtopic.php?f=399&t=254372

The Nature Explorer program can be used as a pure birding program if you take out all the other topics from the topics.txt list. I feel it needs an alphanumeric sort option for the lists. The old version had that.

Best wishes

Sarah

I'd really like to see the full EuroBirds eventually, forget the other forum just keep it here.

This is a beta for tablet devices using 1024x pixel screens. It should work for most tabets.

Feedback would be useful.

Hope to read something from tablet users.
In my case doesn't work: seems to grab info only for Birds but no image/photo/etc, nothing is showed.
More: no buttons on top.
I made a fresh install, moved apk and Aviasoft folder into the internal SD but this did not have a positive result.

P.S. I have a Flytouch3 16+8 GB sd memory, Android 2.2 1024x600.

TABLET BETA FEEDBACK REQUESTED

Can anyone give feedback on the tablet version of the program?

Here is apk 1.4.2 for tablet devices:
http://www.mediafire.com/?a8fbnjhmmz3w4e4

It works fine on my little phone (albeit the layout is obviously too big for my qvga screen).

It totally does not work correctly on Amedeo's 10 inch tablet at 600 x 1024 x 160dpi.

In the past I used pocket birds eguide , for Google Earth GPS files for save-bird location. In this software is there, or will there, this option?
Thanks
