Any kind of teaching or educational software

Hi Rainer

Thanks for the work. I hope it will be of use to others. I agree that the program could support topic-group (i.e. sub-category) maintaining better for users who wish to edit the data sub-category index lists to match their locality better.

I have given thought to this in the past. One good way would be to take the database and put it in an SQL database format. But this has a big down-side... people like the simple file system NX uses because it allows easy editing of data and images. Were I to replace all those simple files with a single SQL database it would possibly be much harder for people to edit and change into other languages. The up-side to SQL would be no more category index lists! You could select the exact set of items with a search, as you can in any database program.

I will look into your Perl program. I don't understand what Perl is at the moment. :)

Best wishes

Sarah

New look menus for coming version 1.9

I am working on a new look to the menus for the soon to be released version 1.9.0.

Each list menu (Topics, Categories, Items) will have a picture icon next to the name. This will replace the old picture menus that I have recently removed.

The new lists work as before but replace the old 'spinner lists' and give you full-screen list selection. For those with slow devices this icon-in-menus can be switched off from the new Setup screen.

hi

had to go back to previous version on archos 32,htc hero,i5700 and i5500 as categories menu is overlayed over topics menu making it almost unusable.you have to use hardware keys to get to topics menu(archos doesn't have these keys) and even then is still a pain...hope up coming version fixes this issue..

Hi Lohtse

I have completely redesigned the menu page so this is not going to happen for the v1.9 release.

Dear Sarah,

This was not my intention to complicate the maintenance of the textual information.

The issue is only the many group files (i.e. index0.txt, index1.txt, etc.) that I need to be manually maintain after each data update by you. Each group file contains the common name translations that need to be "recovered" after the data update. My Perl script helps me reducing my effort to a minimum. It uses the common name translations and latin names from the info files (i.e. 1t.txt, 2t.txt, etc.) for automatically generating the new group files. An item's key is its unique ID. Therefore, my script reads only the IDs from your original English group files.

To be clear: I am fine with the text files.

Best Regards,

Rainer

Dear Sarah,

Are you aware of 201 info files in the Aviasoft/Eurobirds folder that are not referenced in any group file? Examples are 8, 22, 29, 36 and 43. My Perl script NXLocalizer checks the group files for these unreferenced info files. Would you like to see the full list? I could send it to you by e-mail.

Best Regards,

Rainer

That would be very useful. :)

I think as new species have been added to topics they have not all been added to a category index.

I would like to reference every species in the sub-categories and it would be most useful to know which species are left out.

I understand your Perl program. It would be very useful to anyone who is modifying the index category text files into another language. :)

This is specially true for Birds.
The application was created for a smaller number of birds (may be some 300) then our Spanish friend (LOBO .. something) added a great number of species(mainly vagrants) going over 700. Those added species were added only in INDEX0.
I created a sublist of some 542 species with complete updated indexes , but all this in and out may have left unreferenced species.

I have added all those extra 'vagrant' birds to a new category (I am refering to a 'group' as a 'category' in the coming version 2.0.0). Many of these birds are so very rare and you would be forgiven for wondering if we invented them.
'Yellow-bellied Sap Sucker', for example, is just silly!

I am assured the list is now the full official European (western something) list of birds. I decided to keep these rarities away from the main catigory (group) index lists for the sanity for those of us who are not really dedicated birders. It would be really hard to find an everyday bird amongst the amazing plethora of rare birds that might just get blown across the Atlantic to Europe every few decades, but birds that we will never, ever get to see. So they are there in the program but they won't get in the way of everyday use. :)

New Major Version release 2.0!

here...

viewtopic.php?f=399&t=286364

This version has major changes in the way the menu works.

Over 1000 database files have been added or edited. Birds data has been greatly improved and added to.

For this reason I strongly recommend previous NX users download the full Aviasoft database folder. (There is a basic updater folder on my website if you don't wish to do this. This basic updater will not include all the data changes and is intended only to make the new version program function correctly. It includes new index and group files!)

This has been tested more than other releases but it may still have bugs. Please let me know if you come across one.
