NATURE EXPLORER version 5 changes...

This is a newly worked version with a number changes

It has been re-coded to be more efficient and slicker with the 'clunky' and never used features removed. This is to bring it back to its original PDA concept of an easy to use in-the-field guide for beginners and experts alike.

Removed:
-GPS LOGGING: (I wish to use GPS locations in field notes but not in the unusable format Lat/Lon. Google Earth POIs might be a more usable way of GPS logging what we see in the field.
-BIRD SONGS TAB PAGE: For topic Birds you can now listen to the Bird's song directly from the picture pages. Each song has a little progress bar showing where you are in the song's duration.
-PHOTO and VIDEO taking options have been removed. I am sure you know your device well enough to prefer using the built-in Picture and Movie taking apps better than having to get to know yet another way of doing this same thing. I may put the photo taking option back as a feature of a specific species - i.e. the photo you take is added directly to the database and for the viewed species. This may be useful for Flowers, Fungi, Fossils, Rocks, Weather.
AUDIO SOUNDS: the app no longer beeps at you (but Bird Songs remain). Instead there is a Category progress bar showing where you are (first to last) as you move through the species in the chosen category. This works very well and you can easily see when you are nearing the end of the items.
SYSTEM MENU: The device's system menu button no longer serves any function in the app. Instead you can more easily get to the Preferences from a dedicated button on the main topics menu page. From Android V4 the system buttons were removed and replaced with a software button bar which replicated the hardware buttons. Since that change many developers have stopped using the system menu button and replaced it with their own app menu button. This is what I have done too. If you really miss the system hardware menu button function let me know.

UNINSTALL is no longer needed prior to install of new apk. Just install v5. 0 over the old one!

There is a new, easy-use Preferences page (Android standard style) with more user settings.

Many glitches and bugs were discovered and fixed during this reworking. There are still a couple of things that require further research (making the species images be completely centered in the display area and placing the species name in the title area during the FIND species operation).

Hope the changes don't upset anyone (but It needed to be done, imho). If there is anything removed that you'd like to see put back let me know and if enough people agree it will be done

Appreciate very much the "persistency" of selections. Doing it at every startup was quite annoing.
Fixing the centering of images will be candies on the cake.
One thing I will vote for to have back , is GPS: better simple coordinates than nothing. Integration with Earth will be fine but not mandatory. Should you decide to have GPS again, please consider the possibility to have more than one GPS data (Lat,Long,Date and Time) for each species (this will help to find interesting species in the future).

The wild herbs are missing from the webpage. Thanks for keeping this app up to date.

Fixed in v5.0.1

Even with the latest 5.0.2 I do not see 'Marine life' in the list of the app, although I do have all topics folders installed on my SD card.
What could be wrong?

Birds.zip corrupted??
Can't open with 7Zip or native windows 7, says it's corrupt or invalid.
Can I use old v4 DB in the meantime?
(just deleted everything off phone in an attempt to fix my "missing topics" issue)

I am uploading birds. Zip at present and i am struggling to get it uploaded because i do not have a decent internet connection. While i am uploading files they may be corrupted. So please try to download it again later today when hopefully i will have succesfully uploaded them.

This missing topics problem is bizarre. There is nothing wrong with the program code and most people do not have problems with missing topics. I can only assume it is an android version or device firmware issue.

The only answer (assuming this is not a user generated error and i think we already checked this) will be to rewrite the way the program finds topics and hope that circumvents the issue.

Old bird database is working for now, are the updates in the most recent DB significant.
Missing topic issue still there for me, was Marine Life in v.4 (and Fossils before that). Now it is Wild Herbs, gonna try deleting some other topics to see if I can get it to re-appear.
(topics.txt contains all twelve topic titles, ES file explorer sees all 454 files in Wild Herbs folder)

Yes. That folder name is was changed from WildHerbs to Wild Herbs some time back. It is wrong and will cause a path error. Is this an old version of the database or did you get it recently from the website? I am slowly uploading topic zip birds but i will re up thie other topics afterward.

The topics with two words... Wild herbs, wild flowers, marine life, etc, must have a space between each word. This was not the case with version 4.0 so new data folders are needed to replace old ones.

Hopefully, i will upload all topics again by end of day, but i am working through giff gaff mobile and not landline, and it takes forever! Lol

yup, just the info tab that doesn't give me anything, the image, photo (and detail, map on birds) tabs work fine.

BTW is there supposed to be an Aviasoft folder on both my sdcard0 (phone RAM) and extSdCard (my 64gb micro SD card)?
The installation created both.
I put the data folders in the extSdCard one.
