I have no use for the app, but is it even legal to charge for this? VLC is an open source project - aren't you building an add-on to it, which would require being GPL'd?

As you say, VLC is GPL, but I don't use any of their code. I just interact with VLC through their published interface. This kind of interaction doesn't bring any requirements for me to GPL my code.

(similarly - windows can say to VLC 'please open this file' without Windows becoming GPL'd)

$2 is seriously nothing and y'all should pay the devs if you like the app. By all means download the full version and give it a go but seriously, software development isn't easy and you wouldn't have these kinds of apps but for the talents and hard work of the devs, plus supporting them is also supporting the Android platform which we all, I'm sure, love to pieces.
