I see there's an unlocked froyo edition too - does that imply this won't work on Froyo, or is it backwards compatible?

Both versions are compatible with Android 1.5+ and the different editions refer to the features available in each. v7.x has the enhancements and features that are in android 2.2 (Froyo) and v8.x has all the features from Better keyboard 7.x and it’s loaded with all the new enhancements from Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).
