I understand that some people may not have this issue but let me explain where I'm coming from. After you released 2.0.8 I was really happy using grooveshark even though it occasionally had issues that caused it to crash. Once it even told me my trial was over and that I had to get vip to continue, but simply clearing the app's data solved this issue.

I setup the app not to offline songs and I wasn't using it in a way that should have caused any suspicion. Next thing I know I see version 2.1.1 released and so I uninstall 2.0.8 and upgrade. Suddenly I start getting grooveshark audio ads playing instead of songs. Next the app starts playing songs I've never even heard before making the app completely useless.

I try to revert to version 2.0.8 only to find that the same issues now occur with that version too. Well if it isnt the version then it must be something else right? Low and behold someone posts a link explaining the incorrect song issue. It's the attacker detection system that has grabbed your ip and blacklisted you.

I don't personally have a clue how to change my unrooted unmodded droid x's ip and even if I did, I'd probably have to make a new account anyway! It seems like I'm not the only one having problems either. My warning is aimed at users thinking about switching from 2.0.8 to 2.1.1.... Why would anyone risk being blacklisted by grooveshark just for a version with a few updates. The new features are nice but it's not worth being blacklisted over them!

Unless you can provide a valid reason that I shouldn't do everything I can to warn other users about the possibly that this version will result in blacklisting, my warnings will remain intact.
Again, this is nothing against you, I just am playing out the golden rule (the whole do unto others thing) Personally, I would want someone to warn me about something like this.

EDIT:
AFTER EXTENSIVE TESTING I HAVE DETERMINED THE FOLLOWING:
THIS VERSION OF THE GROOVESHARK APP SEEMS TO HAVE CAUSED MY ACCOUNT TO BE FLAGGED. THIS MEANS THAT IT NO LONGER WILL PLAY THE SONGS IT SHOWS THAT IT'S PLAYING: IT CHOOSES SONG/SOUNDS/WHO KNOWS WHAT TO PLAY AT RANDOM.

APPARENTLY THE GROOVESHARK APP HAS PLACED SOME PIECE OF DATA ON MY SYSTEM THAT THE APP CAN CHECK LATER TO SEE IF A PIRATED VERSION HAS BEEN USED. THIS MEANS THAT EVEN IF I CLEAR THE CACHE, CLEAR THE DATA, UNINSTALL THE APP, DELETE ALL TRACES OF IT FROM MY SD CARD, CHANGE MY IP, CREATE A BRAND NEW EMAIL, INSTALL THE OLD VERSION OF THE APP (2.0.8), AND CREATE A NEW USERNAME THE APP WILL STILL KNOW I AM BLACKLISTED AND THE APP WILL BE INOPERABLE.

I HAVE REPEATED THIS WHOLE PROCESS A BUNCH OF TIMES AND EVERY TIME THE SAME THING OCCURS. BECAUSE OF THIS, MY ONLY OPTIONS ARE TO PAY THE MONEY OR TO TRY WIPING MY CARD AND FACTORY RESETTING MY PHONE (NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS WOULD EVEN WORK).

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO FACE THE POSSIBILITY THAT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE GROOVESHARK THEN BY ALL MEANS GIVE THIS VERSION A TRY. OTHERWISE, I SUGGEST YOU STAY WITH VERSION 2.0.8 TO AVOID LOSING ALL FUNCTIONALITY (LIKE ME).

sure, sure, i understand where you are coming from. i am avoiding technical details for various reasons but let me put it this way. all the admin needs to do is grep a few logfiles and compare it against accounts. any account that has had many requests for music or requests after 7 days of creation that is not a vip could be flagged along with the ip. it should not be difficult at all.

even if there was some sort of call-back function that was used to help identify attackers in the new version, and i have not examined every single line of code so i can't say for sure, it would not be necessary. there were many legit accounts that were banned before the anti-attacker code was tweaked to not be so strict. perhaps your account was unnecessarily flagged?

changing your ip on your phone can be done in various ways depending on your provider. you may be able to turn airplane mode on and off a few times or power cycle the phone and removing the battery. there may be a guide specific to your carrier online. changing your account is easy.

i've been running through the code since someone has mentioned a problem and if i find anything i'll update asap but ultimately the server op can detect anything if he/she is clever enough and the best case scenario ends up with changing ip/account every few days/weeks when something goes wrong.

I wish I had known about the ip change method. I'm not sure if all of the following steps are necessary but it's the first thing I tried and it worked. I cleared the data and uninstalled grooveshark. Next I put my phone in airplane mode and then pulled the battery while the phone was still on. I restarted my phone and sure enough my ip had changed. I installed 2.1.1 and logged in with my regular username.

Everything seems to be working now (my custom playlists, the popular playlist, etc). I will continue to mess with it. I will do you the favor of toning down my warnings for now. I will update them again based on my findings.

EDIT:
If you install this version, you run a high risk of being permanently blacklisted by Grooveshark which will render all cracked versions of this app unusable. The only conceivable way to possibly get around the blacklisting is a factory reset and an SD card reformat. The links below provide more information about this.

So does the official Grooveshark app have in audio ads if you have legit VIP access? I was thinking about purchasing a year of vip but it there are ads screw that.

Oh yea I am on 2.0.8 with a fresh created account and everything works great with no ads. (no playlists though since it is a fresh created account)

I'm getting the same random song problem, tried playing on wifi and changing my 3G IP address and login info with no luck, I'm sure the crackers can come up with some kind of workaround soon. :]

Have you tried stopping application, wipe data/cache of app, uninstall, delete /sdcard/grooveshark (entire folder), reboot, reinstall and use new account? Try all those things in a row, don't skip any and if you've done them previously do them again.

Besides all this, you're running cracked versions of software. Everyone knows that you're taking a risk trying to get around any kind of software, let alone one that has a recurring charge to it.

Got the same problem. I think it's related to cracked Grooveshark. Anyone can upload the original Grooveshark apps here?

I am pretty sure the answer to that is no.

I just tried this using version 2.1.1 and then again using version 2.0.8. On both, the app worked as advertised when first logging in. After that, (after shutting down the app) the same problem occurs with the wrong songs.

How the hell am I being flagged? I'm making new email accounts, using unsimilar usersnames, and according to www.whatsmyip.org, I'm using different ip addresses to do all of this. I have gone through the entire process more than once for each version (2.1.1 and 2.0.8 )

This tells me that the new version must have a security feature where it plants a bit of code or a file somewhere on the phone when the attacker protection triggers. It must not check for the file until the first time the app is used after installation... Pretty sneaky bc it then gets to blacklist the new account that you thought was working...... Talk about frustrating! Perhaps I could get an account working again if I did a factory reset and a sd card reformat, but here's the thing, I don't have that type of time or patience and neither do most people.

It appears that my ability to use grooveshark is now gone. Just fyi I'm using a verizon droid x without root or modding.

I will wait for your feedback before updating my warning messages, but as of right now this looks pretty bad. Unless you have any further ideas I intend to notify potential users that this version could permanently remove their ability to use ANY cracked version of grooveshark unless they are willing to wipe their card and factory reset their phone.

[EDIT]: I have waited a substantial amount of time for your reply. My warning messages have been updated across the board in hopes that no one else runs into the problem that I did.

I think Grooveshark is trolling warez users... I just tried buying a $3 account and installing the non-cracked app with the legit account. No more random songs. I didn't create a new account or reset my IP or anything.

I wonder if the app will be any less buggy now... if so, I'll probably consider it to be worth the $30/year.

For $3 a month it's certainly worth not having to reformat my SD card every few days. This is the best music streaming player out there.
