Image

  • worldwide navigation using Google Maps Directions
  • map tiles caching on SD card

  • option to hide zoom buttons
  • installable on non-rooted devices
  • could be installed beside original app
Credits:
  • canadiancow for starting a brainstorm; an idea to use maps directions as backend for navigation; great Nav Launcher app; helping and support
  • TAPP for enabling "Navigate" button; first version for non-rooters
  • acamar for his research on map shift issue in China
  • many, many people for testing it, complaining ;-), helping others, etc.
  • Google for making this great app and service and for not sending C&D to me so far ;-)

brut16 (09.08.10)
  • fixed "Data exceeds UNCOMPRESS_DATA_MAX" issue
  • removed es_MX language - es is used instead (caused by above issue)
brut15 (07.08.10)
  • does not work for many ROMs - "Data exceeds UNCOMPRESS_DATA_MAX" issue
  • updated GM to version 4.4.0.4414

nice thanks , but i have a issue (BIG) with this.

so it installs right beside regular Maps app but it doesn't connect|sign in to you existing google account, thats really odd.
kinda freaks me out, it practically forces me to add a google account on my existing device which i don't want.

starting regular Maps app it's all fine and normally signed into google with no problems.

my question is : is this normal and ok or should this maps release use regular|default login credentials ?

Hmmm.... I'm using it on my HTC Tattoo (stock 1.6 ROM - unrooted) and I don't have that problem. Very fast and accurate position findings and navigation WORKS! In my country - Serbia?!?!? wOOhOO! :)

Ne jesti drekeca :)
You can enable map caching (Menu -> More -> Brut Mod -> Read map from cache, Save map to cache). This will force GMaps to save map tiles to the SD card and read from the SD card first, before attempting to download from the net. You can connect via WiFi (or any other net source) and preload the tiles before you start your trip, thus making the maps available for offline use.

I had some strange behavior like that (and other) and found (not too hard) that when disabling "International navigation" everything comes back to normal.

Has anyone tested the SD cache option yet? I was searching like crazy for that before I got a cheap data plan, and ended up with Rmaps I think it was.
Does this work as well as Google maps with added functionality or is this more buggy? I'd really like this option but I don't need it that much to trade maps in for an unstable version.. Any honest advice appreciated :)

I was able to install it on my LG GT540 non rooted device. It installs by the side of the "Maps" that came with this device. It runs Donut (Android 1.6). I don't wanna upgrade it to Droid as I have seen performance degrading after upgrade, specially on LG Optimus GT540.

Can you uninstall the original "maps" and "Navigation" that it sits beside?

Running fine on Huawei Ideos X6, Froyo 2.2
