can't install. Tried to delete maps.apk from /system/app/ folder (it was there, not in /system folder), but it's protected, couldnt delete it.

edit: and of course i uninstalled earlier version of brut maps first.

Do it in recovery mode, you have to be rooted for that.

Yeah my mistake /system/app 8)

Same here, can't install it. I already removed maps.apk via Titanium Backup. Even mounted as R/W in rootexplorer before doing the GUI install.

I'm on Milestone GOT 2.1.

(I'm sorry but how do I install an app while in recovery mode?)

While in recovery mode, do following steps from windows command prompt & point the directory towards your android sdk folder which contain adb:
1. Mount /system
Code: Select alladb shell mount /system

2. Mount your sdcard if you want to backup before deleting the apps.
Code: Select alladb shell mount /sdcard

3. List the installed apps in system
Code: Select alladb shell ls /system/app/

4. If you want to delete... (case sensitive) for example:
Code: Select alladb shell rm /system/app/Calculator.apk

5. Alternatively to move it to sdcard.... (this step will also remove the app)
Code: Select alladb shell mv /system/app/Calculator.apk /sdcard

6. Do a double check whether the apps is successfully removed with step 3

This should works, I think you can only do uninstall system apps via GUI/ Titanium Backup if you have full read write access via /system overlay.

Ok, since I'm away from my home PC, I tried tinkering around and I was able to install it! Here's specifically what I did:
1. Uninstall Maps.apk via Titanium Back-up
2. Clear Dalvik Cache via Titanium Back-up
3. Clear cache via Cachemate
4. Go to settings >> manage apps >> uninstall 0 byte file for Maps.apk
5. Retart phone
6. Paste Maps 4.6 mod in System >> app folder
7. Rename to Maps.apk
8. Install <-- Success!!!

I may have gone a little overboard, but what matters is I was able to get it in. :-P Thanks for the upload diversity, and thanks fatthumb for the Adb tutorial still. :-)

P.S. I have not installed Adb in my PC, can any of you point me to a good adb tutorial? You may PM me for it as this thread might go off topic.

What are the advantages of this over the unmodded version of google maps?

This version is known as the "Brut Mod" and allows navigation where Google is restricted in certain Countries. This is not needed in the UK or US.
