Worked for me. Here's what i did

uninstall Original map normally
Install the non-rooted one
it'll give login fail
drag the triangle down, give permission, 1st time it ask was something like sid or lsd.. can't remember, i gave permission
then close map, open again, again says login fail, this time it says google maps
i gave permission. Works now.

"NONROOTED"??? Errrr I think you mean "STOCK"? LOL

When posting this stuff, you have GOT to post details about supported and tested OS versions (e.g. 2.3.6, 3.0.2, 4.0.3, 4.1 etc...). You also need to post detailed instructions for installation on Rooted devices and Stock devices! It's probably an idea to also mention 'signed' and 'unsigned' files!

Do you need to clear data of existing G! Maps before install?
Do you need to have a specific version before install?

When posting a topic, please provide more finite details so there are fewer people with issues and questions!

Google Maps v6.3.0 'OWNHERE' Mod - Root Device Instructions By Flipmode!

    STEP ONE:
      * Firstly, backup any data you want to keep form Google Maps - sync it or save it to your card,
      * Next, make sure Google Maps is not running (usually evident when viewing running services),
      * Click Settings, Applications, Manage Applications,
      * Scroll down to "Maps" by Google and click,
      * Click the "Force Stop" button to terminate all Maps processes accessing the files,
      * Click "Clear Data" to wipe v6.x settings and data (may conflict with new version),
      * Download the appropriate version of Google Maps from above,

    STEP TWO:
      * Open your favourite file explorer (ES File Explorer, File Expert, Root Explorer),
      * Ensure the file system is mounted (Root devices),
      * Navigate to ../system/app/ path [Read only for 'Stock' devices!],
      * Find the existing Google Maps "maps.apk" and back it up to your SD Card for safe keeping,
      * If there is still a "maps.apk" file in the ../system/app/ path, you may delete or ignore it,
      * Rename the downloaded APK from "maps6.3.0-ownhere.apk" to "maps.apk",
      * Copy the downloaded and renamed "maps.apk" to your ../system/app/ directory (overwriting if necessary),
      * Set system permissions to the new "maps.apk" (OWNER: R+W, GROUP: R, USER: R - I think that would be '0644' from my old FTP days! :P),

    STEP THREE:
      * Exit out of your file explorer,
      * Power off and restart your device,
      * Launch Google Maps - it should now be updated to v6.3.0!

NOTE #1: If "Ownhere" modified edition already installed, simply install signed APK, upgrading Google Maps to v6.3.0.
NOTE #2: If your device is stock Android OS, you must use the appropriate Google Maps v6.3.0 "Ownhere Mod" edition. Using APK for rooted devices will not work! Please download a Signed APK for Stock Android OS.
    NOTE #3: Supported Android OS's include: v___, v___, v___, v___, v___, v___, v___,
    NOTE #4: Tested & verified root ROM's include: ____ v___, ____ v___, ____ v___, ____ v___, ____ v___, ____ v___, ____ v___,

Please quote and make corrections in RED, if required.

Now who is going to write instructions for stock devices ('non-rooted' :P) for people like me! :P
