GPS applications, rather than GPS navigation software

the 2 circles show maps at larger or smaller scales, for the area you are in. you should be able to remove them and the compass using the menu.

Thanks for that information. The two buttons didn't work for me so I have removed them.

yes, u need maps of one area but at different scales in the map folder or they won't do anything. useful for quickly showing an vide area overview map rather than endlessly scrolling across a high detail map to find some point.

i have these maps and they all work with mmtracker.

the os50 landranger maps needed the dates changed to allow them to continue to work with mm for windows software. i altered my maps using a hex editor. only the os50 maps needed this editing as the memory map windows software won't display old maps. mmtracker does not check the dates. but whoever edited your maps may have somehow damaged the maps' binary header causing mmtracker to think the maps are not legacy format.

Thanks for the reply, what do I have to change? or better still could you pm me links to os50 area 3 so I could try it.

I Have installed V1.10.4 on my Samsung S6 and I'm very happy as it seems to work fine. I am now trying to install V1.10.6 on my Samsung Galaxy 10.5 but am having difficulty creating directories for the maps, tracks, routes and waypoints. I thought it would be a similar process to creating the directories on my S6 where I connected my S6 to my laptop and created the necessary directories via my laptop.
Unfortunately this is not proving to be the case with the Samsung Tablet. Although I can create the directories on the tablets SD card via my laptop they are not displayed when viewed by the Tablet to use those folders to store the maps etc in.
Can anyone advise me how to either create the necessary new directories directly on my Samsung (I couldn't see any option to so when asked to create directories when setting up MM Tracker initially) or to do so via my laptop where they are actually displayed on the tablet.
Thanks for your help.

There are issues with getting mmtracker to hold onto the directories you have set up. This seems to be a problem with the way the app accesses file structures. The app author uses one method to set the main 'maps' folder and another method for other folders holding tracks, waypoints, etc. The maps folder gives access to the full internal and removable memory but the access to memory when selecting the other 3 directories is limited to internal memory. Why? God knows.

You should create a Maps folder (or any name you prefer) on the removable card (or internal if you wish) and then point the program to this folder when selecting the 'maps' folder. For the other directories you should try to point to a folder in internal memory, any will do. The newest version of the app has a kitkat workaround (kitkat = android 4.4) but in practice it would be better to try to use internal memory if you have any issues with the external sd-card.

I found that sometimes the app forgets what you chose previously, which is very frustrating as it asks you to set these folder paths every time you run the app. This is an issue with later versions of Android (4.2 upward I think). You should try different folders for these paths until you get one that it likes and so stop the continuous 'set paths' request at startup.

This app was originally written for Android 2.x so 4.x devices might have problems.

Thanks for coming back to me. Do I need to point to three separate folders on my tablet when asked to create directories for the tracks, routes and waypoints or can I just point to any displayed directory in the internal memory?
How do I go about viewing the directories that are displayed on the tablet but not shown when the tablet is connected to my laptop? Is there another way to view these folders via my laptop as they are not displayed when clicking on the tablet in windows explorer and then either the internal memory of the SD card?

theripper...

Here is a download link to OS50 map03 (Landranger southern Wales area). It works perfectly on my Android 4.2 phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini) with MMTracker.

I always use a single folder for all items. With earlier devices I used a single folder for maps and everything else but new Android devices are getting problematic when it comes to accessing memory. My phone (Android 4.2) allows me to use maps on SD-card memory and I use internal memory for everything else. But my partner's new tablet (Android 4.4.1) doesn't always remember the directory settings and requires internal memory only for all operations. Google strikes again! Anything kitkat or newer is going to give old apps that require memory access a hard time I guess.

I believe the only folders/files that the tablet can show you but which the connected PC cannot would be the Android system area, and you don't want to do anything there. In fact, you will not be able to access this area except in read-only viewing mode unless you have rooted your tablet. But this area is really a no-go area for user files. I would suggest you create a folder of whatever name in internal memory using the tablet's file manager app. Then try pointing the mmTracker directories there. On all devices I have tried mmTracker on the Maps folder can be selected on the removable card easily but it is not possible to do this for the other three map-related directories due to the strange way the author wrote the program. As an Android app writer myself I don't understand why he used two different methods to access the file system like this. When setting the directory for the maps his code allows the user to view and choose a folder from anywhere, external (removable) sd-card or user-internal memory. The other three directory setting operations don't show the external (removable) sd-card at all under Android 4.x devices. My old Android phone (v2.2) worked fine and you could select all directories to be a single maps folder on the external sd-card, even though the app uses 2 different folder selection methods. So its down to Google's changes in Android that this has become a problem.

All I can say is try selecting different locations until these locations are remembered at app startup, and you are no longer asked to 'set directories'. Good luck. If you find a solution maybe you would be kind enough to post it here?

Thanks again for your info. This is very frustrating, I downloaded a file manager app for the tablet but even though I can now access more folders I still cannot use or create a folder that is also displayed as an option when setting up the directories in MM Tracker. This is trying both the internal and the SD card.
No problem creating new folders either directly with the file manager or via my laptop but they are not shown in MM Tracker.
The contents of the Tablets SD card when displayed on my laptop are mainly my additional photo albums, but when the SD card is displayed in MM Tracker the folders are completely different and I cannot see any of my albums listed. Not sure where they are stored in the memory card.
Both my Samsung Galaxy 10.5 (V5.0.2) and my Samsung S6 (v5.1.1) are up to date. I didn't experience any problems like this when setting up MM Tracker on my S6.
It would be nice to know if anyone has successfully installed MM Tracker on their tablet.

It is a pity the official Memory Map app does not seem to work. Thred here...

viewtopic.php?f=440&t=318042

You need a rooted device and still it seems impossible to get it registered.

I think this mmTracker is the only way we can view these old legacy UK O/S maps on Android. For what its worth the official Memory Map app also has path issues with the later versions of Android. The Memory Map company threatened the author of this app with legal action (for writing a 3rd party app which can view legacy maps) which is why it is no longer supported, so I think we have to make the best of this.

Yes I did load the Memory Maps app on my S6 phone but only had a 10 day trial to use my existing maps with it before I had to buy a licence for each map. I did read about the threat of legal action against the author or MM Tracker as the reason it is no longer supported. I did think about trying to root the tablet but am a little reluctant to go down that route unless I knew MM Tracker would work if I did and also not give me any further problems in rooting it.

After trying many options with the Galaxy 10.5 tablet I can now set the Maps directory to the internal memory and also see that folder when connected to my laptop. However when I go to create or select a folder for the Tracks, routes and Waypoints, unlike what you have described above I am only given the SD card as an option and then I am back to not being able to see any of those folders on the SD card when connected to my laptop.
I could try taking the SD card out of the tablet and seeing if that forces MM Tracker to offer the same folder in the internal memory for the Tracks, Routes and Waypoints but I only have a few mb left on my internal memory and 23gb on the SD card.
I'll keep plugging away to try to resolve this until I run out of enthusiasm.

On my S6 the same folders are displayed when connected to my laptop as displayed when asked to select a folder for the Maps, tracks etc. That was straight forward to both install MM tracker and also to move maps and tracks over to the appropriate folder.
