If you live/work in an area of low or zero network coverage then by turning on Airplane mode whilst you sleep/work you could significantly reduce battery usage during that period and still use your mobile as an alarm clock etc. Even if you have good network coverage you'll still save battery power by placing your mobile in Airplane mode when you don't require any of the mobile network/wifi/bluetooth functionality.
