Hi TouchOfGrey.
It really depends upon what your goal is - for permanence with maximum access, sadly - GV is the best choice IMO.
For temporary uses...:
If said service will tolerate a TN number - then I'd just go ahead & use it in the GP version WITH the ads.
My goal was different in that I have a couple of non-activated phones being used wifi-only.
Sometimes it is helpful to use this for calls over wifi only & that is where TN came in handy, BUT:
On 1 phone I stupidly tried to update it before the warnings came here & that was the end of TN for that phone - the other is still using the older 'premium' version from here, but WITH ads & I'll just leave it as-is so long as it keeps working.
There's a couple of other options like that thing called 2nd line - and if you bring up TN at GP you'll see others suggested, but of course they all have ads, IAPs, etc...
What with the Sprint changes likely coming soon due to the merger - expect lots of things to get shook up, and TN will be in that bunch for sure.
Another (but paid & cheap) way to get a number temporarily is with a good VOIP service like voip.ms - and using VOIP opens a whole slew of great doors both for mobile and simulated landline uses via an ATA.
HTH !!

At the very least, I would like to be able to create, albeit temporarily, a # I can use to verify an online registration, that likely won't be used again by the registered service.
