About Hangouts (replaces Talk)
Hangouts brings one-on-one and group conversations to life with photos, emoji, and video calls for free. Connect with friends across computers, Android and Apple devices. Brought to you by Google.

● Say more with photos and emoji.
● See when people are together in Hangouts, when they’re typing, or whether they’ve seen your message.
● Turn any conversation into a video call with up to 10 friends.
● Message friends anytime, even if they're not connected right now.
● Use Hangouts on computers, Android and Apple devices.

More Hangouts awesomeness:
● Hangouts stay in sync across devices so you can start or continue them anywhere.
● Choose from hundreds of emoji to help you make your point
● See what you talked about in the past, including shared photos and your video call history.
● Get notifications just once. Once you see an alert, you won’t see repeats on your computer or other Android devices.
● View collections of photos shared from each of your Hangouts.
● Snooze notifications at times when you’d prefer to be undisturbed by alerts.

Notes:
● Unlike Google Talk, Hangouts does not support "invisible" status.

What's New
Merged SMS/Hangout conversations: SMS and Hangout conversations with the same recipient are now combined into a single conversation. You can control whether you want to send a message via Hangouts or SMS with the flip of a switch, and different message types will be easy to tell apart in the conversation. Of course, you can always merge and unmerge conversations if you’d like
Highlighted outgoing Hangout messages
Simplified contact list: now there’s two main sections in contacts — People you Hangout With, and Phone Contacts — making it simpler to navigate, and easier to use for SMS
More Prominent Presence Status (on call, moods, etc)
New Notification sound
Separate voice and video call tones
Performance improvements: today’s update includes better quality video calls, as well as improved SMS and MMS reliability
Home screen widget: add the Hangouts widget to your homescreen for quick access to your recent conversations

If you've got an older phone that came with Google Talk, you should think long and hard before upgrading to Hangouts. If you go on Google Play, you'll see that for every 3 people who gave Hangouts a "5", 1 person gave it a "1". That's a pretty horrible ratio, and for good reason. The SMS on Hangouts stinks, you'd do much better with something like GO SMS. And for some inexplicable reason, Google ditched the "invisible" status option in Talk so now if you're online, there's no hiding that. Hangouts has a slicker interface to be sure, but Talk, imho, is a superior app. Unfortunately, I believe if you got a newer phone with Hangouts pre-installed, you can't downgrade to Talk. I think.....but don't take that as fact, there may be some workaround....
