This is all well and good but doesn't this app get defeated by the fact apps carry on running in background, surely just a long press of the home key will allow any running apps to be brought back to foreground without password?

Been using this shrotly after SuRViVe posted it. The program has many different options to ensure that apps stay secured when Idle or in Background. There is an "Always Locking Mode" option which auto-relocks any app when you navigate away from it. An advanced setting titled "Relock when Screen OFF" is also enabled, possibly by default. As its title describes, whenever the screen is turned off, whether it be manual or by timeout, all running apps will be re-protected automatically.

With that being said, I launched one of my protected apps (Mobile Banking). Pressing Home and sending it to the background resulted in the app being re-protected again. Re-starting it from either the application tray or by long pressing the Home button sent me straight to the lock pattern screen. There wasn't a half second flash/peek of the Mobile Banking app or anything. The lock screen is immediate. If you prefer not using the pattern unlocking, password input can be used instead.

BTW, pressing the Home button re-enables all protection at any time.
