Instructions to install vm through zip.
- Download the one you want, if it's already a zip file then next step else add (.zip) in the end). If vmos doesn't recognize it, use "7z" instead of "zip".
- Go into adding a new vm, select 3 dot menu and select "Import local rom", select the zip you just downloaded through file manager.

I don't use root in it myself but there are quite a few custom ones available on 4pda, you'll have to check that out yourself though as they are untested by me so I won't post them here.

I`ve managed to install Edxposed Manager and Riru inside the android 9 lite ROM but it wasn`t easy. You have to mod the ROM itself and VMOS is notorious for stopping ROMs working altogether if they detect modifications to their ROMs. You can put Magisk in but you need to use a flashing tool to do it. I actually have all the files and folders necessary to install Magisk v23 but haven't managed to get it right yet. I got the files and folders for Edxposed Manager and Riru from a Telegram channel. The easiest way to achieve this is have your ROM rooted, install a file explorer inside your ROM such as MiXplorer and move the files and folders directly into the system folders when it's active. It's possible to place them yourself inside the ROM from your main phone but if your main phone isn't rooted itself, all the files disappear upon launching the rom or it corrupts it because you need to have access to the system files with write access. Your best bet if vmos still offer this promotion is register an email address and account with them and vmos gives you premium for 24 hours. Then you can legit get root and sort all this out without vmos blocking your modded ROM from booting up. Not sure if the promotion is still running though. It was about 3 weeks ago.

If you downloaded the ROM from here, it`s most likely out of date. Try updating the ROM inside vmos if it`s untouched. If that doesn`t work, delete the ROM completely and download it from inside vmos. The latest Android 9 lite ROM have support for both root and gms

i figured out the issue bro its file name special characters and spaces are not allowed and by mistake you add space in zip file name
its ur android90_lite v10021
change it as android90_lite_v10021 all works
remove spaces from any others roms names if any u uploaded

That`s great news! I tend to find with these ROMs that as soon as you update the vmos app, they stop working. I`m no tech expert though as to why this occurs. This latest Android 9 lite ROM vmos uses now takes up an incredible amount of ram. Vphonegaga seems much better with Android 10, Magisk etc
