Good riddance to Microsoft's puny Office Mobile! SoftMaker Office 2008 is here.
SoftMaker Office 2008 comes with the following applications:
* Word processor: TextMaker 2008
* Spreadsheet: PlanMaker 2008
* Presentation graphics: SoftMaker Presentations 2008

Features :
SoftMaker Office lets you do on a Pocket PC what you can do with Microsoft Office on your Windows PC. Imagine having a full-fledged office suite in your pocket!
Furthermore, SoftMaker Office 2008 is not only available for Pocket PCs, but also for Windows and soon for Linux and Windows CE. You can exchange your documents, without conversion, between all these platforms.

NEW: SoftMaker Presentations 2008: now on your Pocket PC!
SoftMaker Presentations 2008 lets you edit PowerPoint files on the Pocket PC without file conversion and without loss of quality.
All elements of PowerPoint files are preserved, among others:
* all types of formatting
* all slide transitions and animations
* all slide designs and color schemes
* all graphics, drawings, and backgrounds
* all notes and comments
... simply everything that could be in a PowerPoint file!
But highest compatibility is not the only advantage of SoftMaker Presentations: It offers the complete feature set of a desktop presentations program. You can create, edit, and manage slides, insert and edit all types of drawings, graphics, and tables ... even apply all animations and transitions that you know from PowerPoint, etc. etc.
Numerous ready-made design templates make it easy for you to effortlessly create elegant presentations. If you you don't like a chosen design, simply switch to another template or create your own one – with slide masters, placeholders, color schemes, and all the other features that you know from professional presentation programs.

NEW: TextMaker 2008: Word processing on highest level.
Since TextMaker made its debut on the Pocket PC in 2003, it has earned itself an excellent reputation: There is no alternative to TextMaker if you need professional word processing on the Pocket PC, and there is no other mobile word processor that opens and writes Word documents as accurately as TextMaker.
The 2008 version improves on its predecessor TextMaker 2006 yet again. It adds many important new features:
NEW: Create PDF files directly with TextMaker – optionally with font embedding and even as fillable forms
NEW: Print directly from TextMaker – on a wide range of printers by using "Jetcet Print" or, without any additional software, directly to Bluetooth-capable PostScript printers
NEW: Reading and writing of Microsoft Word files has been improved yet again.
NEW: You can now save documents in the OpenDocument format, making it easy to exchange files with OpenOffice.org.
NEW: Apply borders or shadings to whole pages, change the vertical alignment of whole pages
NEW: Copy stylesheets between documents using the new built-in stylesheet manager.
NEW: Objects and graphics can now be anchored to tables. This does not only improve import of Word files but also offers additional layout options.
NEW: Toolbar with built-in word counter
NEW: Menus and dialogs are now also available in Dutch, Italian, and Bulgarian
.. and many more improvements!

NEW: PlanMaker 2008: Calculate and present data like in Windows.
PlanMaker is the only spreadsheet for the Pocket PC that offers the userfriendliness and capabilities of professional desktop spreadsheet packages like Microsoft Excel. A huge number of calculation functions, Excel-compatible charting, AutoShapes, drawings etc. – no other spreadsheet does that on the Pocket PC!
Probably the most valuable feature: PlanMaker reads and writes all Excel files seamlessly. If you need to reliably read and write Excel files on the Pocket PC, you can always count on PlanMaker.
PlanMaker 2008 builds upon its predecessor PlanMaker 2006 and offers important new functions:
NEW: Create PDF files directly with PlanMaker

NEW: Print directly from PlanMaker – on a wide range of printers by using "Jetcet Print" or, without any additional software, directly to Bluetooth-capable PostScript printers
NEW: New automatic functions such as AutoSum and AutoProduct help you fill out worksheets more quickly.
NEW: QuickInfos give useful hints about formulas right when you create or edit them.
NEW: PlanMaker 2008 now comes with more than 330 calculation functions.
NEW: Menus and dialogs are now also available in Dutch, Italian, and Bulgarian
... and many more improvements!

Thanks.
I actually installed this on my pc, and here is what I have to say:

Overall quality is fair. The UI is not very user-friendly. It took me a while to learn where everything was, and even then I was still confused on why they were there.
It is still quite a few months away, before I think it will be ready. It loads rather slowly, but since it is only the second beta, that is to be understood.
The concept is really nice; but the real problem lies where they tie both the desktop and the WM version, to the same UI. They need to be different, and one having more features than the other. I don't think I could ever create a presentation on a WM device, just because I am used to seeing everything, all at once. That was the main thing I was testing. The other things were really not that important; besides additional font support, Mobile Office does everything fine. This beta/product still lacks Windows Mobile 2007 Office Support. They need that to be present, or else you'd be stuck with those docx files.
Nice beta, still not useable. Will try again when the next beta is released.
Features
First software to implement desktop features, on Windows Mobile Software.
Not only can you modify and preview existing presentations; you can create your own from scratch, a very first for us Windows Mobile users.
Animations and slide transitions settings; allows you to use one of a dozen different available schemes and transitions.
Backgrounds and themes.
Rating
Performance: (Beta Rating)
7/10 - Performed fairly well for being a Beta release.
Features
10/10 - Due to the amount of features, on a mobile device.
Usability
4/10 - There is much need for improvement on this area. The desktop is really ok how it is; what really badly needs work is the Mobile version. It doesn't use any softkey UI at all; it doesn't lay out the features, and settings, in a user-friendly order.
Progress
This still has a while to come, before being the best software to use. After all, why would you pay for this software, that comes with desktop companion, when there are free versions out there that offer better features, and have Office 2007 support. Also, why not add a feature that is an add-on to Microsoft Office, where you can save the file as the format that this product uses.

Being a beta release, I am scoring this based on the continued development of this product. This can easily score a 8/10.

Please update your description of the program; you imply that the program is limited to only editing powerpoints. This is not true, and in fact, you can create a powerpoint presentation without the use of a computer.

Thanks

Can anyone please confirm if the description in the first post is accurate with the actual installed copy?
Does this expire? Because someone said so in the post above but in the decription it says "RETAIL".
I already have the 2006 and wouldn't want to ruin my PDA config for this app just in case its just a DEMO.

Thanks. :)
