Is it possible to accept the updates that are offered on the market periodically. I have a previous (downloaded)release of this excellent app, which cannot be updated. When I try to accept the update I am greeted by a message stating that the update is not possible as I did not buy the app.

No. Only way to update a cracked version is to download a new cracked version.
