Edit: Ignore my previous comment. After a device reboot it worked. I think it was trying to access the app Google Play Games, which I don't have, and it was hanging because of that. After a reboot it informed that it needs the aforementioned app but I skipped installing it and the game worked.
I installed the mod on top of the normal apk. I am still not sure though if the mod is supposed to be installed as standalone or on top of the normal apk. It didn't work though.
