SideX 2003 v2.5 (Freeware)
Requirements: PocketPC 2003(SE), WM5
Overview: SideX 2003 is an original utility that will revolutionise the usage of your Pocket PC. In effect, it gathers numerous functions and can easily replace all the Today screen plug-ins by placing them all on a sort of bar that can be hidden (it sits on the side), to be called up whenever necessary.
The most interesting thing about this product is that it is complatible with plug-ins: they are added to SideX, that starts out empty.

SideX is docked, a mini-bar is visible on the right hand side of the Pocket PC's screen, and is available to run the applicaton in full screen. Without closing it, you can access numerous functions with a minimum of screen taps. This mini-bar comprises two red buttons: the little bright one kills the active task or program, and the second button is a shortcut to shutdown the PocketPC. These two buttons have different functions if they are held down for a long time. To deploy the SideX bar, you only have to click on the zone above one of these buttons, to see the primary selected tool (or plug-in).
It comes with a half dozen plug-ins, for free as standard, to illustrate its functions: you will find a (very basic) calendar viewer, a 4 operation calculator, a biorhythm viewer, a clock, and a restoration of 3 modules taken from the Pocket PC (keybard, letter recongizer and Block recognizer), allowing you to place them elsewhere on the screen (in the SideX bar, for example) rather than their traditional place (at the bottom of the screen).
You may nore that SideX 2003 uses a localised configuration menu in the Settings tab on the Pocket PC, which allows you to configure the plug-ins available in SideX, imported into the Today screen plug-ins (functionally non-garanteed) and to select skins, sounds and to configure the program down to the finest detail.
The greatest flaw with using SideX is the impression that it slows down the PocketPC: it is difficult to evaluate, but it seems that this tool consumes a non-neglible percentage of the CPU.
Otherwise, the major problem is that the supplied plug-ins don't allow you to fully appreciate the functionality of this product, all the major plug-ins (resource viewers, toolbars) are shareware, making the user obligated to buy the various plug-ins...
Nevertheless, SideX offers an alternative to the Today screen and to the Task manager, by giving you a tool bar with the appearance of a set of drawers of which the contents vary according to your needs.
Included applets:

QuickPack --> Three Month Calendar, Biorhythm, Simple calculator and Fancy digital/analog clock

SIP Pack --> Use your program with full screen by using SideX SIP Keyboard

SideX skins --> Skins
