G-Light v1.0 (Freeware)
Requirements: PPC WM5, WM6 - HTC Diamond
Overview: Adjust your backlight levels according to the values your light sensor measures

Image

Because I wasn't satisfied with the automatic backlight adjustment of my Diamond (it was always too bright for my needs), I made G-Light.

With this tool you can adjust your backlight levels according to the values your light sensor measures...
You can also change the interval how often the light sensor should be accessed.

With those two features you may save some battery power (still need some benchmarking if this is true...)

Another app, running in the background, frequently polling the sensor.. wouldn't that eat up the battery as well, defeating it's purpose?

I personally use a hotkey to turn up the brightness to max, then use the brightness shortcut on the today screen to change it to w/e level I feel comfortable.

It does not hurt your battery life at all. In fact, It helps it. I have been cooking this app into custom roms for a while now and it is great.

That doesn't make any sense. Can you please explain how an app that's constantly running in the background reading values from the light sensor every x seconds, doesn't have an impact on the battery, especially on the Diamond, which comes with a measly 900mAH battery?

My point is that if one really wanted to save battery life, they wouldn't rely on automatic polling apps and do w/e the app was meant to do, manually. My theory is that it's better to set up hotkeys to change the brightness instead of having an app that's always running in the background.

I doubt it's reading any values from the sensor when the display is off.

^ Don't be so sure. At first I used to think that the screen is locked (as in, display gets deactived) when you turn it off, but the only thing it's doing is turning off the signal and backlight. The screen is still active, because even with the display off you can go about clicking stuff (which is why there are programs to lock the device upon inserting the stylus, and other programs like S2U2.) But it's weird, isn't it, I mean why should the screen (or more appropriately- touchscreen) be active when the display is off?

Anyways, even if G-Light didn't read values from the sensor when the display is off, it's still running in the background, consuming RAM and CPU == battery usage.

Seriously guys, if you're on the Diamond and haven't found your perfect radio+rilphone combo for your carrier, that means your battery runs out real fast and every bit counts and adds up.

The reason I'm saying this is because maybe the mobile is a toy for you but maybe it's at times an important communication tool. The second day of getting my diamond, I was held up and had to come back home pretty late. Unfortunately, battery had just run out on me. I also moved homes so I wasn't familiar with the route. Had to change buses to get home, but missed the interconnecting bus. The next bus was like after 1 hour. Had to stand all alone in the chilling cold at night in a new place, with no means of communication and no one around. How I wished my Diamond didn't die out on me. Luckily, no untoward incident took place and I reached home safely. (Just to let you know, after-hours it's pretty unsafe around where I stay. I was mugged just last month on my way home. ._.)

Of course, a spare battery is a solution, but I've instead decided to carry a spare good ol' Nokia phone, whose battery still lasts for 2-3 days :)

So my point of this rant is that don't underestimate the value of your battery/mobile, every bit counts. You never know.. that extra 1% could save your life one day.
