Alfred, I follow you... so try this exe...

http://rapidshare.de/files/48240196/PocketBirds_344x_VGA_GPS_TEST.rar.html

Copy this modified PocketBirds.exe file to your PocketBirds program install folder and run it.

It should allow you to click (and save gps position) the GPS status button (top right of the PBE display) even if it is showing red.

When you feel the program is actually receiving gps signals click the gps light and then view the gps log file in the PBEdata/GPS folder.

The date/time will be logged but you will only get a valid lat/long if the gps signal is getting through ok :)

If you get a valid lat/long then problem solved :)

Sarah,

I downloaded the new file and followed your directions above, but unfortunately this file did not change anything: still nothing written to the GPS file.

Two additional notes if I may:
1. Saving the bird with the "hart", now adds the time, but this time is always 11:15 pm (while my clock is running properly)
2. In the programme: Tapping "I" gives text of a bird A. With the text open, tapping the loupe and selecting a bird B, the text of bird A remains on the screen.

regards,
Alfred

Ok. I will make a proper gps test program for you. It was worth a try :)

Item 1. Yes :? It does save the time of 11:15pm whatever the actual time might be. I will look at the code to see what is going on.

Item 2. The text staying on-screen even when you move to the next bird... This doesn't happen with the QVGA version or with the VGA version running on the PC. (I don't have a VGA ppc yet so I can only see it working under emulation mode.) I don't understand why you continue to view the old-bird text page. I will look at that too.

Thanks for the help :)

Hi, Dear Sarah,

Thank you for your hard work and your great program ! :)

Just some little ideas for improving:

Make GPS to accept the following tweaks: port 1 to 8 (not 1to 4 as it is now), FSC Loox N560, choosing the sk soft port for gps is Port 8.
Same for speed: not only up to 19200, but 57600, as FSC Loox N560 does.

A hearted THANK YOU !

With kind regards, Zeno Sloim

AN ERROR WITH GPS FUNCTION...

Alfred (and anyone else who has had problems with the gps on pocket birds 3.4.x)...

I have just discovered that there is a problem with the gps code that I believe is causing an error. The gps tells you that the port was opened OK. Then the gps lamp goes red but never gets to ready (green).

It seems to be to do with my using a newer version of the compiler I am writing the software on.

It never occured to me to check the gps function as it was working well with the previous version of the compiler.

And that's how dumb I am! (I once took off in a light aeroplane without checking that the cabin door was closed. There had been an aircrash and I had to fly to the crash in a hurry. But that is no excuse. I had to unbuckle myself and climb over a passenger seat to close it. Luckily I didn't have any passengers on that flight. And so there I was and trying to close this stupid door and every few seconds reaching back at the controls to keep the plane the right way up. Trouble is.. at 190 knots a 'slightly' open door will not close. The wind stops it, so you have to push hard at the door and then slam it shut. Which means you almost fall out of the aeroplane in the process - well, my map and checklist did, anyway - sucked out and lost for ever. Luckily they didn't have my name on them) :) The problem isn't that I am a female pilot but that I don't check things properly! Like with this gps thingy.

Anyway, When I can find the error I will fix it (asap) and post a gps-working version as 3.4.6.

Please accept my apologies if it has caused anyone problems, and apologies for all the hassles, Alfred.

Hi Sarah,

I am puzzled..... (precaution: sorry of I missed something..)
Since I upgraded to v 3.4 on my Touch HD, I get only 1/4th of the screen, which makes the whole thing unusable.

I surely have missed something?

THANKS & Cheers!!!!!

Forget it. I used the QVGA cab  . Thanks again for your very handy piece of software.

Sarah,

Thanks very much for all your efforts to get the GPS part of the program running. Also I would like to thank you for your impressive story on your plane (trying to help someone, you almost got into problems yourself).

No need for appologies. I do really appreciate all your efforts! Many years ago I have tried to some simple programming (Quick Basic), so I have a little experience with this error prone work and know how difficult it is.

Alfred

Thanks for your understanding, Alfred :)

I feel pretty silly putting you through all those messages and tests when the problem was on my side all along. What I should have done was to test the program to make sure some error had not creeped into the code. Strangely it hasn't done that - this problem is to do with the new version of the language compiler I use to write and compile the birds program. Somehow it worked on the previous version and simply does not work properly on the latest version. I will fix it very soon though. I added extra ports and baud rates too.

Do you know what port/baud-rate your blue-tooth gps uses, Alfred?

I used quick-basic too: back in the late 1980s on the first pc computers :) Wow, I must be getting old :(

Apologies again,

Sarah

Sarah,

I am using a Adapt AD-800 as my external GPS mouse, in combination with an Acer N311 PDA and usually GPSgate (Franson). Port and baud-rate do have a wide selection but the ports that I use are usually up to and including COM9.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your kindness and response :)

However you forgot to compile and add the icon resources to latest PocketBirdsVGA.exe from inside the cab :)

Pocket Birds Europe 3.5.0 CABS (QVGA and VGA/WVGA)

OK guys, I fixed the GPS problems and here are the new CAB files...

QVGA Program 3.5.0 - CAB (WM5/WM6) (1mb):
http://rapidshare.de/files/48274231/PocketBirds_350_QVGA.rar.html

VGA Program 3.5.0 - CAB (WM5/WM6) (1.4mb):
http://rapidshare.de/files/48274240/PocketBirds_350_VGA.rar.html

Zeno.. You no longer have to choose a port or baudrate with this new version :)

Alfred.. With luck this should solve external GPS connection hassles. :)

To use your GPS simply go to the Habitats menu and click on NO GPS if it has a tick-mark beside it. This enables the gps and starts it all up.

If you do not think the gps is working after deselecting the NO GPS option then tap the GPS Lamp (in the top-left of the pocketbirds display) and you will see the status of the satellites that are being recieved by the hardware. Even if you are not in a good reception area you will still see some Sats Found (i.e. in view but not clear enough to use).

Hope this works for everyone.
