New Beta CABS for version 4.0

What's new or fixed?

- WVGA option
- Automatic storage card pathname detection and setting.
- Updated GPS code for non-HTC devices
- Latin name search working
- POI GPS Logging to text file and to a Google Maps POI file

I believe this is pretty much it now.

The QVGA CAB coming shortly.

When the data folder for the full 750 birds is ready in English (I don't have it in English yet) I will release it all under the version number 4.0.

Some initial notes on the new beta release. I have an HTC HD so used the HTC release.
1. When installing, it did not install over the 3.6.4. release, and I now have both. Don't know if this is intentional. Very Handy.

3. Could not switch on GPS. I really wanted to try the Google, and have looked forward to this. Greyed out and Habitats/Options/Start GPS had no effect. Still I've got 3.6.4 and GPS works on that.

I must have made a mistake in the gps code somewhere. I have no way of testing HTC GPS code and I am copying/pasting from app versions that did work (like 364). I will check it out and try to find the error, A.

I tried a few things to see if the GPS not working was something I had done.
Tried removing 3.6.4.
Tried non-HTC version. Tick comes up on Habitats/Options/Start GPS but stays grey on main screen.
HTC version does not even give Green tick on Options screen.

have exactly the same problem: gps button grey, the GPS light doen't switch on.
Overall this is a great release.

Alex here is a photo I took in 2007 of a Australian Black Swan. There are some here in England. Quite rare though I think. If you need a piccy for this bird (there isn't an illustration in Collin's Birds eGuide) here it is. I have others if this one isn't good.

Hi Sarah,
GPS now works but cannot find the records, none of both.
Initially I had problems because tried to register touching the green button (as it works in PFungi) but eventually I read your instructions. No success: if I try to write without gps fix I get the usual message, if fix is there, no message , but nothing happens.
Since you probably will have to look into the code, may I ask to see if possible to add the famous sound (or nosound) to avoid skipping records?

First off many thanks to you and everyone who has helped for such a brilliant app, it's helped me out no end. Just a couple of things though, firstly I can't seem to download the latest 3.5.5 user manual as the link (http://rapidshare.de/files/48395711/Poc ... 5.rar.html) in the first post seems to bounce out to the http://rapidshare.com/ front page. I have tried with Firefox and IE with no joy and the other user manual download links I could find still point at the 3.3.0 manual.

Secondly I've found the GPS function pretty useful in the past but having updated to the latest HTC version I can't seem to log a location. The GPS itself is fine, it picks up satellites, shows lat/long and the button goes green but pressing the green button doesn't add anything to the GPSbirds file. I get the impression from the post above however that that's no longer the correct way to do it, any chance someone could point me in the right direction until I can get my hands on the latest user manual?

Glad you like the program. The guys are now just getting a new dataset together with 750 birds! It will then have the same coverage as Collins eBirds Guide.

I made the green gps on lamp work as before (tap it to save the current bird as gps log.

I will repost an updated manual too. The site at rapidshare.de has finished sadly, so any links using that filesharing site (I used it a lot) will no longer work.

Sorry I have been having trouble with the site due to cookies etc.
I have tried Pocket-Birds vga HTC 401 and when I now select GPS I go to a page which says how the GPS is doing. If I click ok or back then I revert to Birds and the light goes green. Tapping the green light does not seem to do much.
The GPS directory has a GPSbirds.txt file which is empty despite pressing the green button. Am I looking in the right place for this issue? Am I missing a file?
I have tried HTC VGA Cab 4.0.2 but the Habitats/Options/Start GPS has no effect so GPS light stays grey. I note that the options button is at the top of the selection of HABITATS unlike the 4.0.2 which has it at the foot.
As an aside I still have a bit of work to do to get the automatic lists done for the larger number of birds: progressing well now I've moved to Microsoft Excel/VBA. Trying to keep it simple but bells and whistles keep getting in the way.

black swan is in my dataset at ref.742 .
If you need it, I can send pictures, text and map.
Perhaps it is time to check and sync DATAsets.

Hi Sarah/A/All,
I attach the 3 pictures I have for 742 in my last issue.
I'll change the 742ph.jpx to Sarah's when I reissue complete, so they will be synchronised using Sarah's photo, pucci463 map and the sketch shown. I'll add a 1300 pixel image when or if I find a suitable one.
