Andrew..

I am finalizing a v1.1 version and I only managed to create the out-of-memory error after a long while, using the new picture slide-show option. I clicked 'yes', to continue. The program continued ok. So maybe the message was not a critical one at all.

I am wondering if this system error message might be a bogus one?

If you get the message with a 'choice' message box, choose YES and continue loading.

I suspect this program is getting near the limits of what a PPC can handle (at least, using the compiler I use to create these programs.). I am going to find out about memory management with the compiler program I am using to see if I can periodically free up memory.

Hi Sarah,
I installed the pgm and had the same problem. The "out of memory" comes while loading the file ( you get an advice that this will take 1 minute) and the pgm aborts. Once the start up begun, but the frame with names was empty.
No way to continue.
I've seen that loading the program after a clean reset everything is ok and work.
25% of times stops with error.
As you may remember, I'm now using a F900 Acer, WVGA with plenty of space on screen: would love to have larger images.
Overall would say that this is a nice program, may be too rich for a "non professional" user.
More : while with the scientific binomial names I can understand for sure which species is referred, with minerals the situation is more ambigous.
Cannot commit to transalte 4000 names but with this capability enabled someone could do the job or , at least , create a subset with say 200 minerals which could be enough to have a quick guide.
TIA
A.

Hi guys

It seems as if the program is demanding too much memory for many of your devices.

I have an old wm5 QVGA PPC but I have not had these troubles. You would imagine If it would work on my ppc it would easily work on newer ones. :)

One thing: I have installed the CAB program onto the SD Card and not into internal memory. Does that make a difference?

I think what I will do is to have two variants of the software:

- A 'Lite' version with the 1675 minerals than have pictures, for non-professional users. (This would give the most interesting minerals and screen-sized photos without the large memory overhead.)

- A Full spec version with 4144 minerals, for professional users. (This would give all minerals and larger photos but would expect more memory - something I would guess a professional person would arrange.)

I will also look at crunching the data to save memory in both programs.

I have v1.1 ready except for these memory saving recodes. It has a slide-show gallery of the photos and if you tap a photo you can then go and view the full data. Works nicely. :)

Pocket Minerals LITE! 1.1 QVGA CAB

Here is the 'Lite' version for the new v1.1 program.

I release it here because it will be interesting to see if Andrew and Amedeo find it works better withour memory limitations. :) (But the main v1.1 release is about a week away and will have full-screen pictures or optional 800x600 images.)

http://rapidshare.de/files/48684292/PMinerals_Lite_116_QVGA.rar.html

This 'Lite' version has a database of 1675 of the most interesting minerals - in fact, all the minerals that have associated photographs! It also has a slideshow picture gallery. If you tap on a picture you can see its details.

Hi Sarah, downloaded and installed.
Didn't get out of memory but the pgm is QVGA so cannot see images nor gallery.
BTW for mistake launched the full version and had again an out of memory after quite long wait for files upload. After "continue? - yes" the frame for image is black and cannot see any image anymore.
TIA

Amedeo! The VGA cab is coming shortly (also a full-version professional cab).

Both the Lite and the Full versions of v1.1 will have gps logging in Lat/Long and UTM formats. I am also going to include this in the five nature programs soon.

But I have to upload the larger picture packs before I can release v1.1 - it is taking me some time to do that.
