If it does not belong anywhere else and has to do with Pocket PCs post it here.

I have spend sleepless nights fiddling with my windows mobile 5 device and Windows Vista Business trying to get the mobile device to use the internet off my laptop using an ad hoc wifi setup, but alas, I always slam against a wall.

Does anyone have any idea on how to get this to work?

I'm have a broadband connection of which I enabled ICS on. I created an ad hoc network and my device connects nicely with the laptop running vista and I am able to share files between the two. The only thing that is not being shared is the internet connection. Once connected both the laptop and the device are assigned IP addresses in the 169.254.xxx.xxx range.

I have tried everything from manual IP configurations to using a proxy and disabling my firewall but nothing seems to allow the device to share the internet from the laptop.

If anyone out there has an idea about this, it would so appreciated if you can share your experience here.

Thanks.

I'm no expert, but I think there's something wrong with those IP addresses (169.254.xxx.xxx)

If I'm right, one should be 192.168.0.1 (the laptop), and the PPC should be 192.168.0.xxx
Try to set those IP addresses manually, with ICS turned on.
Also don't turn the firewall on until you get it to work.

I hope that helps...

Thanks wasol, sadly I tried that, I assigned the IP's manually and the devices connected nicely but the mobile still cannot reach the internet. I can see the two little monitors on vista flickering when the mobile is trying to reach a site but nothing happens even when the firewall is down.

This used to work easily and without problems on win xp, I really have no clue what to do next on vista.

Thanks again mate.

169.254.x.x is default range for ICS - I am running exactly same configuration at home (but on XP). Enabling ICS sets IP 169.254.0.1 for the WiFi card in PC. WiFi in PDA gets assigned random IP from the 255.255.0.0 subnet automatically upon its connection to the PC. Works perfectly.

Apparently, your ICS configuration is OK if you are able to access files across network. What firewall do you use? Does it have a real-time log? If so, check it for which connections are trying to pass through it.

Thanks czbird. I'm glad the IP's assigned look normal.

I'm using Kaspersky and the traffic through it is flowing perfectly, anyway I've switched it off and tried the connection but it's the same results.

I'm sure it's a vista thing because when device connects it assigns it limited local connectivity, I wouldn't of thought that would cause a problem as the vista firewall is any way switched off, maybe it's something else which I can't figure out.

I've noticed something funny though, when I try to access the shared folder on my pc from the device using the regular file explorer, I would get a message saying "Cannot connect with current connection settings." but it connects fine with total commander. That's a recent development and the message is also occurring when I try to open a webpage through pocket explorer.

czbird, I've also had a nice setup with XP but can you tell me if if you've done any special setup on the mobile device? I would usually assign the wifi connection to "Work" and then configure "Work" to make it access the internet.

Thanks again guys and I ain't giving up until this works :)

Yup, all works well now. It appears that if the device gets assigned an IP in the 169.254.x.x range, it'll only be good for file sharing and such but not internet sharing. By manually assigning the ip 192.168.0.1 on the host machine and assigning an ip in the range of 192.168.0.X on the device together with the default gateway of 192.168.0.1 and DNS of 192.168.0.1, all works miraculously well.

Thanks for your feedback guys.

Hey,

Does this mean that the internet sharing from laptop to pda is not possible?
