does anyone recall and can point me to the recent video cam release that would play the video cam on a continuous loop whose duration was adjustable and it would also run in the background maybe even with device sleeping otherwise?

Are you talking about AutoDVR? You should be able to find 1.3.5 floating around. I wish there was version 2 (includes GPS overlay).
