You can use PimBackup found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705 for personal info such as messages etc or you could use SPB backup, sprite backup, or resco backup all found on this site and all have the feature to selectively restore personal info. :) But I would recommend PimBackup just for your messages.

Pimbackup's the way to go, you can do contacts, emails, calander items etc and you can schedule it too. Use it all the time, specially useful before flashing new roms
